Denver Heights Church of Christ

Originally the Pierce Avenue Church of Christ who moved due to the disadvantages of their location.

In the summer of 1907, J. Early Arceneaux engaged in a tent meeting at the corner of Porter and Gevers Street in the new South Heights Addition.  Arceneaux persuaded the brethern they should select a better location and erect a new building.  Thereupon, property 50 by 150 feet was purchased at the intersection of Porter and St. Anthony Streets in September 1909.  A building was erected thereon.

When the decision was made to move from 112 Pierce Avenue, the building was dismantled and all the usable lumber was put into the new building at 401 Porter Street.  Two pulpit chairs were still in use, after refinishing, until the Denver Heights church moved to its new location on Highland Blvd in 1949.

At the time of the move to Porter Street, the elders and trustees were  Milton Brockman, J.J. Jackson, and L.H. Bradford.

Average weekly contribution in 1912 was $3.50.  It was not enough to cover the expenses making it necessary to borrow $23.00 from Milton Brockman to pay the expenses.  After a special collection was taken of $10.40 a payment plan was set up so the church could repay their debt.

The name changed from South Heights Church of Christ to Denver Heights sometime between January  1916 and November 1917.

First baptistry in town:  1918 at Denver Heights.  Prior to having a baptistry, most baptims took place in the San Antonio River at two locations:  1) Navarro St. Crossing near Yoakum's Bend and 2) Off South Alamo near Pioneer Flour Mills.

Some dissension arose early in 1920, and since many of the group felt a need for a new work in the Hunstock Addition off South Presa Street, between 35 and 50 persons asked for letters and set about to establish the Grove Avenue Church.  W.D. Bill went with them as preacher.

Wilson's term saw the establishment of a weekly radio broadcasts over WOAI, beginning Sunday, May 21, 1939.  It continued until April 1947.  In the eight years of radio preaching several thousand gospel tracts were mailed in answer to requests emanating from the broadcasts.

In 1944, three lots were purchased on Highland Boulevard.  The move into the new edifice was made on the first Sunday in November,1949.
