John S. Durst

John was baptized by Benton Sweeny in Leona, Texas while serving as a soldier.  His father was an early settler of Texas and served as a mayor in Nacogdoches.  John baptized thousands during his ministry.

He moved his family to Junction in 1885 and preached until shortly before his death in 1924.

"After proclaiming the gospel for sixty years, he wrote in 1924, 'If I have been of any service to my fellow citizens, and to the cause of my Master, it has been no more than my duty and in my humble way have fulfilled my mission.'"  Frontier Times, October 1924

Quoted from History of Churches of Christ in Texas 1824-1950

A brother-in-law of John's was Austin McGary, the founder and editor of The Firm Foundation.  Durst wrote many articles for McGary's publication.
