Guest editorial: Heartstrings by Glen Markham
Oh, to see the world through the eyes of a child again. There are things my grandson can see at the age of nine that I cannot see at the age of 52.
He recently called and asked me to come to his school in Tomball and speak at career day. I am a glorified paper pusher for a health insurance company. I could not figure out how that could possibly be of interest to a classroom on third graders.
He actually wanted them to know about my part time work in the security field. I work at a number of venues including the AT&T Center, home of the San Antonio Spurs. My grandson wanted me to talk abut all the famous people I meet.
Little did he know the truth. Most of the time I stand at the front door and look into purses for guns, knives or outside food or drink.
I also get to wand random guests. The only time I am part of the action is during rock-n-roll shows that I do not want to hear.
Anyway, being the good grandfather I try to be, I packed a bag, took a day of vacation and headed to Tomball with no earthly idea what I was going to say.
One week before the end of school is not the best time for a guest speaker. I told the kids how to be safe at the arena and they wanted to know if I knew any professional wrestlers. A little boy named Solomon asked me to say hello to Kobe Bryant for him. They were also excited when I handed out plastic cups from my primary job.
Those kids reminded me how good life can be. What I know to be a minor job in to them a source of wonder. Maybe that’s what I need. Maybe that is what your job needs. Or your marriage. Or maybe even your faith.
