Stokes retiring from preaching

SAN ANTONIO -- Southwest Church of Christ celebrated the retirement of Bob Stokes on May 1 with a congregational luncheon.  Stokes has worked with the Southwest congregation for over 14 years.

"It's been many enjoyable years," says Stokes.  "As far as fellowship, caring and love,  I have been part of many congregations, but Southwest has had the most profound effect upon me and my family.  It is truly the most loving congregation I have ever been associated with."

Since leaving his job as an administrator with the Judson School District a few years ago, Stokes has put his full-time effort into ministering to the congregation. He and his wife, Mary, plan a  move to southern Georgia, where both were born and raised.

There, they will spend time with his 100-year old mother-in-law. However, the couple plans to  return  quite often to San Antonio and Cibilo because their children will remain in this area.

Stokes' departure opens up the position of preacher at Southwest.  Interested individuals should see the ad in this issue.

Students featured at gospel meeting

SAN ANTONIO -- Students from a training school preached a gospel meeting from Sept. 16 - 19 at the Southwest church here. The theme of the 24th annual meeting was "Battling to Stop Sin in 2010."

Austin's Southwest School of Biblical Studies sent some of their men to bring the lessons. Featured speakers included Jacob Rutledge (Thursday - "Awake to Righteousness"), Jeff Whatley (Friday - "Break the Shackles"), Moises Umana (Saturday - "Look to the Pattern"), Sam Wilson (Sunday AM Bible Class - "Polish the Armor") and Tim Obanon (Sunday Sermon - "Transform my Lifestyle").

All five of these students are in their second year at SSBS. Following the worship service on Sunday, the church held a fellowship luncheon. Robert Stokes is the local minister.
