Southwest Church of Christ

Also known as the Medina River Church of Christ.

The Medina River church of Christ had its beginning in August 1951 at which time a meeting was held by Bro. Louis White of Lytle and Bro. James Eubanks of the South San church of Christ.

The church met in a tent following this meeting on the property of Mrs. A.B. Talmadge.

1951 - In December the church began meeting in the home of Bro. and Sis. S.A. Ohlhausen.

1952 - The church building was completed on land donated by Mrs. A.B. Talmadge.  The land was donated in memory of James Carson Ohlhausen, Jr.

Bulletin: Medina River Church of Christ, April 24, 1960.

Brother S.A. Ohlhausen departed this life to be with the Lord April 4, 1960.  Brothe Ohlhausen is and will be greatly missed by his family, church and the community.  We have suffered a great loss.  But we are comforted in the confident belief that our loss is his gain.  Paul said, "...to die is gain" Phil 1:21.  Again, "...to depart and be with Christ is far better" Phil 1:23.  David said, "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints" Ps 116:15.

Brother S.A. was a Christian, a faithful member of the Medina River church of Christ.  Before coming to this community he was a member of the South San Antonio church of Christ having served as one of hte bishops of that congregation.  During the last 8 or 9 years of this life we worked diligently to build the cause of Christ in this community.  The success that has been attained thus far is due in great part to his efforts.  His Christian influence and works will continue to live on to lead others to Christ.  He was strong in the faith, pure in life and faithful in service.

Stokes retires from education, but not church

Article appeared in CNOST, Feb 2010

SAN ANTONIO -- Robert Stokes retired on December 15, 2009 from Judson Schools after having served for 20 years.  Stokes served as Vice-Principal at Kirby Middle School.  For almost the past 12 years he has preached for the Southwest Church of Christ which meets at Pearsall Road and Loop 1604.

Stokes attended the Randolph congregation, but went to work across town with Southwest after several invitations to speak evolved into an offer to take on the role of preaching for the church.  Now that he's retired from education, Stokes says, "I can concentrate more on church work and my wife's 'honey-do' list."

Stokes continues to volunteer with the HOW Foundation, a drug rehab center where he can teach and build relationships.

Stokes grew up in Omega, GA and attended the University of Florida in Gainesville.  He retired from the US Air Force after having served in Thailand and the Southeastern United States.  He then went to work with the Judson school district as a computer-tech teacher.  He moved into the role of Vice-Principal 4 years ago.

Stokes is married to Mary and they have four grown children.  Avery (36), Setoria (34), April (31) and Robert B. (26) live in the San Antonio area.
