Name:  Alamo Heights Church of Christ  (Later becomes Sunset Ridge Church of Christ)

The following history is from:

J. Marshall Butz, A Brief history of the Church of Christ in San Antonio, Texas, 1876-1951.

The source material contains additional sources.

"Alamo Heights suburb and adjoining sections, such as Terrell Hills, Terrell Heights, and Terrell Terrace, have only recently been evangelized by the church.  In the past, Christians residing in those subdivisions have attended worship in other congregations.

This is a fertile field, however, and individuals who were driving long distances began to consider the advisability of starting a new work there.  Such men as Titus Holland, of Highland, and C.T. MacCleod, of Beacon Hill, were among this number.  They started inquiring and found many of the same mind.  Plans began to crystallize as early as  summer 1948.

Finally, arrangements were made to lease Lions Club Hall, on Chichester at the Austin Highway.  A small group assembled there on Sunday, May 15, 1949, for the initial service of the Alamo Heights church of Christ.  The Lions Club Hall is still in use and will so continue until building plans are completed.  Three lots on Brees Avenue are now owned clear of debt [1951].  Definite designs for a house of worship are shaping up as funds for the program continue to increase.

Some difficulty has been experienced in engaging a regular evangelist, but responsible men have been used on a temporary basis.  Ray Chester, a ministerial student in Abilene Christian College, preached on the opening day.  For several months thereafter, various faculty members for the college filled the pulpit.  In November, 1949, Dean H.E. Speck, of San Marcos, was employed for a period of three months.  James Perryman then came and stayed two months.  Following Perryman, Guy Southern worked with the church from April to October, 1950.  When Southern left, Roy Osborne took over.  Osborne, an Air Force enlisted man, agreed to remain until his enlistment expires in August, 1951.  Whether he will remain longer has not been determined."
