| July 2011 Pan Am Lectureship to find Treasure SOUTH TEXAS -- Missionaries and other brethren are gearing up for the Pan American Lectureships planned for Oct. 29 - Nov. 5, which includes travel dates, this fall. Sponsored by the Jackson Street Church of Christ in Monroe, La., the sessions will take place in the host city of San Jose, Costa Rica, this year covering the theme, "Christ, in Whom are Hidden All the Treasures" (Col. 2:3). Charles Sheppard, elder of University church of Christ in Abilene and former missionary to the Philippines writes: "The Pan American Lectureship has been a wonderful experience. It gives a glimpse into the life of mission sites and folk who are so valuable to the kingdom. The fellowship with native brethren is a delight. The Lectureship itself is great because it features some of the outstanding preachers in our brotherhood." The web site describes another benefit, noting that it rekindles "the flame of evangelism, commitment, zeal, and the tremendous encouragement our missionaries receive with their attendance." Dan Coker, Jim Frazier, Howard Norton and Don Delukie serve as coordinators this year. The web address is www.lectureship.org. For more information, email Frazier at jimwfrazier@bellsouth.net or call the lectureship office at (800) 533-7660. June 2011 Regional churches reach out to tornado victims SOUTH TEXAS -- The disastrous weather that battered Alabama, Missouri, and other states in the nation's Tornado Alley beginning in late April was cause for much prayer during the storms and even more later when the extent of the destruction became known. The National Weather Service reports that the twister which killed more than 100 people in Joplin, Mo., on May 22 was the deadliest single tornado since 1953. Its winds may have reached 198 miles per hour. Area churches in South Texas have reached out to help. Joe Sims of the Northwest church volunteered with the Red Cross in Mississippi. The Northwest and Northside congregations in San Antonio and Corpus Christi's Weber Road church had completed their offering by press time. Together, these groups raised almost $25,000 in aid. Their elders will send the funds on to established disaster relief organizations for the benefit of the tornado victims. The Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., says that if conditions persist, with wider, more frequent, and more forceful funnel clouds staying longer on the ground, 2011 could turn out to be a record year for tornado fatalities. The church remains in prayer. CNOST seeks editor SAN ANTONIO -- The Christian News of South Texas (CNOST) is accepting applications for editor of the newspaper. Manager Diane Drechsel and Linda Dugger, activities director and assistant manager, accepted the "Best Senior Apartments of the Year" plaque during the dinner at the Omni Hotel.
Said founding benefactor Margaret Reaves, "This was a real honor for Christian Village and the first time in 29 years that it has won the award. Diane and Linda are to be commended as well as the maintenance person, Daniel Bosquez and chef, Michael Clark.
"Currently Christian Village is interviewing for another maintenance person. In the meantime Daniel is doing an excellent job of keeping Christian Village looking attractive."
Each year, the SAAA awards “Apartment of the Year” to the top facility in its respective category. The association team makes a site visit, walks the entire property, looks at apartments, checks the amenities, interviews the manager and talks with residents at random.
The selection process also includes a check of financial records and a look at correspondence sent to the manager by the residents. The SAAA also went through the CVA photo album that Dugger keeps.
Upon completing the process, the SAAA team told CVA staffers that they had the friendliest apartment team and residents of all who participated. The plaque will be framed and hung in the lobby of CVA for everyone to take a look.

Nov 2010 New Mcmillan book debuts SAN ANTONIO -- Patricia Hart McMillan and her co-author/daughter, Dr. Katharine Kaye McMillan, are debuting their 9th and newest book, "Christmas At Historic Houses," this month. The volume bears a dedication to the Lord and a local Proverbs 30 woman. “We dedicated this book to Christ, and to Louise Decker, long-time member at Northside and a ‘worthy woman,’ whose gracious spirit, sprightly wit, and steadfast love of the Lord is inspiring,” say the authors. The book consists of 250 color photographs of various historic homes across the United States and in England. It is scheduled to be in bookstores worldwide in November. "The 30 houses from across the U.S. and England, featured in 'Christmas At Historic Houses,' are appealing destinations year 'round. During the holiday season, they are magical," says Pat, an interior designer. She added, "Our new book is full of gorgeous photographs of beautifully decorated houses, ranging from cottages to castles—and one palace! "Many have world-class art and artifact collections. All celebrate Christmas, keeping Christ’s name and message before a needy world." Kat, a research psychologist working on projects for the U.S. military, states, "The stories about the powerful house owners/founders—who they were and who entertained prominent social, financial and political leaders of their day—are history told in a totally delightful way. Many of the houses have collections of personal documents extending over several generations that are invaluable sources for scholars." In addition to books by the mother/daughter team, three signature furnishings collections were based on their "Sun Country Style" texts. Currently, they are at work on volume two in the Christmas house series and two other books scheduled for 2011 release. "Obviously, a favorite subject is historic houses, because they appeal to lovers of interior design, architecture, travel, history, art and fascinating artifacts. The houses in 'Christmas At Historic Houses, Vol. 1' are must-sees for travelers and a must read for both active and armchair travelers," says Kat. Pat and her husband George worship with the Northside Church of Christ here. Pat and her work have been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, House Beautiful Decorating Guide and numerous other magazines, newspapers and websites, including HGTV. Distributed by Schiffer Publishing, www.schifferbooks.com), the Christmas homes book, is also available through Barnes and Noble and Amazon.com.

God has blessed us with a godly and talented teaching staff this year. Ron Goodman from Nashville, Tenn., is back by popular demand as our keynote speaker. He'll deliver lessons on the characteristics of and privileges available to “God’s Friend: 2010.”
One of the camp highlights is meeting in the little church building on the hill. We start filling the building 30 minutes before services begin and raise the rafters with singing! The Gospelaires will perform on Saturday morning. We look forward to our “Stars & Stripes” Banquet that evening.
Lots of fun is in store. Get your horseshoe arm ready, your “42” game primed and your guitar tuned for Talent Night and the hayride.

| ACU Press to Publish Timeless ABILENE -- In Timeless: Ancient Psalms for the Church Today, Mark Shipp, professor of the Old Testament at Austin Graduate School of Theology, has produced a unique volume for use in the worship and study of the church. ACU Press plans to publish volume one of Timeless later this year. Part hymnal and part commentary on the psalms, Timeless provides a way to connect Bible study, hymn singing and scripture reading in the worship of the church. For volume one, various Old Testament scholars have provided new translations and commentary on the poetry, structure, theology, and application of psalms one through forty-one. Using these translations and comments, composers and lyricists produced over one hundred original compositions. Timeless includes multiple musical settings, both traditional and contemporary, for each psalm. These compositions do not simply repeat the biblical text, but reflect the movement, teaching, and structure of the psalm in fresh new ways that can strengthen both the worship and the theology of the church. AGST is pleased to join Dr. Shipp in this service to the church. | | | |
