Fantastic 50th for Weber
CORPUS CHRISTI -- "We had a great weekend for our 50th homecoming!" exults Weber Road Minister, Mark Hammitt. Over 400 attended the Sunday assembly during the Sept. 4-5 golden anniversary celebration, making the fellowship especially moving.
Said Hammitt, "The singing was especially uplifting to our ears and God was surely pleased with praise being sung to Him."
Among the homecoming activities, the church held a special gathering on Saturday to honor recently-retired minister, George Pledger, and his wife, Evelyn. In a Texas-sized thank-you, the couple said in part, "We offer our gratitude to each member of the Web Road family now, and former members, for making the 46 chapters of our life with Weber some of the best of 57 years of ministry. Each of you have furnished us with long lasting memories to enjoy the rest of all our lives."
In looking to the past and more, Hammitt set the course for the future: "Thousands of classes have been taught and sermons have been delivered. The Gospel is still preached in its entirety today!
"Let’s continue to be lights in the world and find ways to share Christ with the lost. Be good examples and let people know you are a member of the Church of Christ.
"Build up your brothers and sisters in Christ by the way you talk to them and about them with others. Be a proud Christian who is not ashamed of your faith (Romans 1:16).
"Jesus tells us: 'Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven” (Mt. 5:16).
Weber Rd. delivers care
CORPUS CHRISTI -- As many congregations do, the Weber Road group here cares for those of the house of faith. The church showed its love in several ways recently.
Led by Randi Jackson, the church here prepared and sent care packages to its students in higher education, both local and those far from home.
The church also offers a special study for college students and young adults this fall. Focusing on "The Christian Atheist," the lessons delve into ways into believing in God, but living as one who doesn't.
In a special outreach, the church leaders held a special luncheon on a Sunday in late August. They spent time getting to know the young adults, and Pamela an Mary Jane Huerta made gift bags for each one.
Citing Mt. 5:16, "Let your light so shine before men that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven," the church at Weber Road here launched its new "Ray of Sonshine" program recently. Pamela and Mary Jane Huerta will lead as servants put together care packages, bags, and/or baskets for outreach throughout the year.
These gift parcels will go to college students, missionaries, preaching students, hospital patients, shut ins, frequent visitors or anyone else who would benefit and be encouraged.
Minister Mark Hammitt listed the opportunities to serve, telling the church: "We need your help to get the program started. Please bring shoe boxes (or smaller boxes), small baskets, gift bags, personal care items, snacks (gum, granola bars, individually packaged items, etc), small games, quarters for college laundry, word searches, puzzles, student supplies (pens, note cards, high lighters, etc), and anything else that might go into a care package.
Hammitt has also announced that Lidia Gatica has agreed to coordinate a new program called “Meals from the Heart.”
Said Hammitt, "We hope to serve many members who are recovering from surgery, just had a baby or have any need for meals to be taken to their homes. Lidia has always been so kind to care for many members and she will do a great job with this new program to serve our family of God."
CORPUS CHRISTI -- Practice has been on-going for area congregations whose young people plan to compete in Weber Road's Bible Bowl on Saturday, Nov. 6 here. The 27th annual contest will test the students' mastery of chapters 15-28 in the book of Acts.
In San Antonio, Daryl Johanson is one of the leaders helping the San Pedro group. Nathan Flynt coordinates the training for Lackland Terrace.
At Weber Road, Larry Sanchez leads the trainers and Jay Crook manages the web site.
Bible Bowl underway
CORPUS CHRISTI -- The 27th Annual Bible Bowl at Weber Road is underway. On Nov. 6, students from the second to twelfth grades from all across South Texas will compete to show their knowledge of the last part of the book of Acts, chapters 15-28. Since Mark Hammitt began serving as pulpit minister, Larry Sanchez takes the reins this year as coordinator.
Hammitt named to succeed Pledger at Weber
CORPUS CHRISTI – Mark Hammitt has been chosen to become the next pulpit minister at the Weber Road Church of Christ. He was formally installed on June 13.
Hammitt succeeds the retiring George Pledger, who has preached for over 46 years at Weber Road. Says Hammitt, “In one sense it’s hard to follow after the success and dedication of Bro. Pledger, but on the other hand, I’ve been here 20 years already serving and the members here are already like family to us. They know us. And I know Bro. Pledger and what he preached and stood for. I learned a lot from him.”
Hammitt attended both Michigan Christian (now Rochester) and Harding. He met his wife Denise, formerly Wright, in Michigan and both graduated from Harding. Hammitt began his work in Pine Bluff, Ak., before moving to Corpus.
He had this to say about the church. “They are concerned about God’s word reaching others. They are like family to us. We’ve enjoyed the activity of the church in all the youth and community programs to reach people for Christ."
The Hammitts have four children. The oldest is Preston (attending Harding), a daughter Courtney, Reagan, and Payton.
The church is now seeking a youth minister.
